Lagos APC Slams Peter Obi Over Yahoo Boys Comment

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned a recent statement made by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election. Obi had described internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys,” as “geniuses” who need proper redirection. The APC’s criticism was issued in a statement by its spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, on Sunday.

According to Oladejo, Obi’s remark is “morally reprehensible” and unbefitting of a former state governor and presidential candidate. The APC spokesperson expressed disappointment and alarm that Obi could make statements that seem to downplay criminal behavior in a society already grappling with moral decay. Oladejo emphasized that there is nothing inherently genius about criminal activity, describing internet fraud as a “social tragedy” rather than a talent.

The APC also accused Obi of seeking political relevance through controversial statements, characterizing his position as a “reckless attempt at attention-seeking.” Oladejo stated that Obi’s desperation for attention has led to a replacement of reasoned leadership with reckless speech. The APC spokesperson further alleged that Obi misled many young Nigerians during the 2023 elections through propaganda, misinformation, and emotional manipulation.

Obi had made the comments while addressing participants at a youth conference in Onitsha on Saturday, suggesting that many internet fraudsters possess creativity and intelligence that could be channeled towards productive ventures if properly guided. He cautioned against the pursuit of wealth at all costs, emphasizing the importance of character, hard work, and community development.

The Lagos APC has urged Obi to apologize to the youth for his recent comments, warning that such rhetoric could encourage moral indiscipline. The party has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and innovation, while rejecting any attempt to romanticize or justify cybercrime. The APC emphasized that leadership must be rooted in values, integrity, and moral responsibility. The controversy surrounding Obi’s statement has sparked a debate about the role of leadership in addressing moral decay and promoting positive values in society.
