The Social Democratic Party’s national chairman, Shehu Gabam, has been sharply criticized by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, for his performance over the past three years. In an interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” program, Aiyenigba said Gabam’s tenure has been marked by a lack of progress.

Aiyenigba’s comments follow the National Working Committee’s decision to expel both Gabam and National Youth Leader Ogbonna Uchechukwu on allegations of misconduct, financial misappropriation, and abuse of office. Despite his expulsion, Gabam maintains that he remains the legitimate chairman of the party.

The publicity secretary expressed disappointment that Gabam did not use the opportunity to clear his name after being suspended for four months. He noted that Gabam has failed to convene a National Executive Committee meeting since June 2022, even though the party’s constitution requires the chairman to hold such meetings at least twice a year. This failure to fulfill a basic constitutional obligation has raised concerns among party members about Gabam’s leadership and commitment to the party’s principles.

The expulsion of Gabam and Uchechukwu carries significant implications for the SDP, which is currently navigating internal conflict. Party leadership will need to address the underlying issues that led to Gabam’s removal and work toward rebuilding trust among members. Moving forward, prioritizing transparency, accountability, and effective governance will be essential to restore the party’s reputation and credibility.
