Mozambique has imposed restrictions on the movement of livestock in Moamba district, Maputo province, following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. The disease, which affects hoofed animals, is highly contagious and can have significant economic impacts due to restrictions on animal movement.
According to Paulo Cossa, Maputo Provincial Director of Agriculture and Fisheries, the movement of cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs in Moamba is currently prohibited. “We have recorded an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the Sábie administrative post,” he said. “We have isolated the area and started taking restrictive measures to prevent the disease from spreading to other regions.” As a result, the movement of animals for breeding and sale in the district is forbidden.
The authorities are working to control the disease by testing suspected animals. In 2023, the government faced a challenge in mobilizing funds to purchase over one million doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccines, aiming to complete the immunization of cattle in the country. The majority of the vaccines were allocated to provinces including Maputo, Gaza, Manica, Tete, and Niassa, which were experiencing active outbreaks of the disease at the time.
Foot-and-mouth disease is considered one of the most significant diseases affecting livestock due to its rapid transmission and spread. The economic impacts of the disease are substantial, resulting from restrictions on the movement of animals and their products. The Mozambican government’s efforts to control the disease are crucial in preventing its spread and mitigating its economic effects.
The current outbreak in Moamba district highlights the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The authorities’ swift response in restricting animal movement and testing suspected cases is essential in containing the outbreak. As the situation develops, the government’s ability to effectively manage the disease will be critical in protecting the country’s livestock industry and preventing economic losses.
