The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to investing in sports infrastructure, training facilities, and grassroots competitions. This pledge was made by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Chief of Staff, Prince Johnson Erijo, during the kick-off ceremony of the 2025 Zenith Bank Delta Headmasters’ Cup Competition. The tournament, which features primary school football players, aims to promote youth development and sports excellence in the state.
The governor commended Zenith Bank for its continued sponsorship of the Headmasters’ Cup, emphasizing the importance of private sector support in promoting grassroots sports development. He urged the participating players to demonstrate passion, discipline, and fairness, noting that they are not only representing their schools but also shaping their personal stories. The governor encouraged the young athletes to work hard, remain humble, and persevere, as many successful footballers began their careers on school fields.
The Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, highlighted the significance of the tournament, stating that it has become a symbol of the state’s commitment to grassroots sports development and youth empowerment. The competition, which focuses on pupils between the ages of 6 and 12, provides a platform for young athletes to develop their skills and showcase their talents.
Zenith Bank’s representative, Ogunbor Ubaka, explained that the sponsorship initiative is part of the bank’s Youth and Sports Development Programme, which aligns with its Corporate Social Responsibility pillars of education, youth empowerment, and community development. The bank has consistently invested in grassroots sports, including the Lagos Zenith Bank Basketball League and the Delta State Principals’ Cup.
In the opening match of the competition, Ezemese Primary School, Ibusa, defeated Okwe Primary School, Asaba, by a lone goal. The winning team’s captain, Ernest Success, expressed satisfaction with the victory, while his counterpart, Oputa Chigoziem, vowed to improve in subsequent matches despite missing a penalty kick. The tournament is expected to continue, providing a platform for young athletes to develop their skills and compete at the highest level.

With the support of private sector organizations like Zenith Bank, the state is well-positioned to sustain its leading position in sports across the country. As the tournament progresses, it is likely to uncover new talents and provide opportunities for young athletes to pursue their dreams in football.
