Amazon invests $5 billion in South Korea AI data centres

Amazon has announced plans to invest over $5 billion in South Korea by 2031, primarily to build artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. This significant investment, revealed by Matt Garman, head of Amazon Web Services (AWS), during a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, marks the country’s largest-ever foreign investment. The commitment was made on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju.

The investment will include the construction of new AI data centers in the Incheon and Gyeonggi regions, near Seoul. This move surpasses Amazon’s previous record investment of $4 billion for an AI data center in Ulsan, made in June. According to President Lee’s office, the investment will accelerate the development of South Korea’s AI ecosystem, aligning with the government’s goal of becoming one of the world’s top three AI powerhouses.

South Korea is strategically positioned for such investments, being home to leading memory chip makers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. These companies produce essential chips for AI products and data centers, which are critical for the fast-evolving AI industry. The investment by Amazon underscores the country’s potential as a hub for AI development and data center operations.

The announcement highlights the growing importance of AI and data centers in the global technology landscape. With South Korea aiming to enhance its AI capabilities, collaborations like this are expected to play a pivotal role in achieving its ambitions. The development of AI data centers will not only contribute to the country’s economic growth but also foster innovation in the technology sector.

This significant investment by Amazon in South Korea’s AI infrastructure is set to have a profound impact on the country’s technological advancement and its position in the global AI market. As the world moves towards greater adoption of AI technologies, such investments will be crucial for countries looking to stay at the forefront of innovation and economic development. With its strong foundation in chip manufacturing and now bolstered by Amazon’s investment, South Korea is poised to make significant strides in the AI sector.
