Nigerian Citizenship Applications Rise With 170 Foreigners

A total of 170 foreign nationals have applied for Nigerian citizenship, according to Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. This information was disclosed in a statement released after a meeting of the Citizenship Advisory Committee in Abuja. The committee, constituted to review and recommend citizenship applications for approval to President Bola Tinubu, comprises top officials from key government institutions, including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The Minister emphasized the administration’s commitment to transparency and integrity in the citizenship application process, highlighting that Nigerian citizenship is a privilege that must be carefully granted. “Our promise stands,” Tunji-Ojo stated, reaffirming the administration’s goal to make Nigeria a prosperous nation and a destination of interest under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Citizenship Advisory Committee views the exercise as a test of its integrity and is committed to upholding the trust reposed in it by Nigerians. The committee will prioritize integrity and proven character in its evaluation of citizenship applications, considering the value of Nigerian citizenship as a significant asset. “Citizenship of the biggest black nation on earth is a valuable asset that requires careful consideration,” Tunji-Ojo added.

The development comes as the Nigerian government continues to explore ways to enhance the country’s attractiveness to foreign investors and nationals. With a large and diverse population, Nigeria offers a unique opportunity for foreigners seeking to become part of a vibrant and growing economy. The application process for Nigerian citizenship is expected to be rigorous, with a focus on ensuring that applicants meet the necessary criteria and undergo thorough background checks.

As the committee begins its review of the 170 applications, Nigerians can expect a thorough and transparent process. The government’s commitment to integrity and transparency in the citizenship application process is a positive step towards maintaining the trust and confidence of its citizens. The outcome of the applications will be closely watched, and the decision-making process is expected to be guided by the principles of fairness, integrity, and national interest.
