Akpabio Misrepresents Nigeria’s Crisis

Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for allegedly giving Nigerians abroad a misleading impression of the country’s economic situation. According to Shehu, Akpabio’s claims do not accurately reflect the true state of affairs in Nigeria.

Shehu took to social media platform X to express his concerns, urging Nigerians living overseas to disregard the Senate President’s statements. He cited the country’s rising debt, which has reached N170 trillion, as a cause for concern. Shehu also highlighted the issue of hunger, stating that approximately 139 million Nigerians are currently facing severe food insecurity.

Furthermore, Shehu pointed out that Nigeria is grappling with a significant unemployment crisis, with around 60 million youths currently without jobs. He also noted that over 30 million children nationwide are suffering from severe malnutrition. These statistics, according to Shehu, contradict Akpabio’s portrayal of the country’s situation.

Shehu referenced biblical teachings, quoting verses from the Holy Bible that caution against leaders who spread falsehoods and engage in deceitful behavior. He specifically cited Ephesians 5:6, which warns against being deceived by empty words, and Jeremiah 9:6, which speaks to the dangers of living in a state of deception.

The criticism from Shehu comes as Nigeria continues to navigate economic challenges, including a rising debt burden and widespread poverty. The country’s economic situation has been a subject of concern for many Nigerians, both at home and abroad. As the debate surrounding the country’s economic situation continues, it remains to be seen how the government will address the issues raised by Shehu and other critics.
