Food security remains top priority for Federal Government

Tinubu govt vows to sustain commitment to food security in Nigeria — Daily Nigerian

The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving national food security, with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, stating that it remains a top priority. This declaration was made during the distribution of farm inputs to smallholder farmers in Osogbo. The minister, represented by Ayodele Olawumi, emphasized the government’s resolve to develop the agricultural sector in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To address the challenges hindering national food security, the government has implemented economic reforms aimed at stimulating productive capacity, creating jobs, and reducing the cost of living. Additionally, targeted humanitarian interventions and emergency responses have been put in place to mitigate the effects of the current food crisis. President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated a strong commitment to transforming the country’s agriculture sector, with food security being a central pillar of his administration’s priorities.

Since 2023, the government has conducted a thorough review of existing programs and initiatives to identify areas for improvement. As a result, several programs and projects have been launched to address the challenges faced by farmers, ensuring that food remains available, accessible, and affordable to all Nigerians. The distribution of farm inputs is part of a broader program aimed at increasing national food production and stabilizing food prices.

The minister urged beneficiaries to reciprocate the government’s gesture by increasing productivity and contributing to the country’s food security. The state Coordinator of the ministry, Taiwo Aiyegoro, noted that the distribution of farm inputs demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting smallholder farmers. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security in the state, Tola Faseru, commended the federal government for its support, stating that the inputs will assist farmers in ensuring food security in the state.

The Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Wahaab Bello, appreciated the government’s gesture but appealed for the resuscitation of farmers’ extension officers to assist farmers in their food production. The distributed farm inputs included fertilizers, chemicals, grinders, and seedlings, among others. The government’s efforts to achieve national food security are crucial, as food security is a global priority underscored in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
