Osun Judiciary Strike Sparks Political Row

Party chieftain reveals reasons for mass defection to APC in Abia

The Osun State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, has been on an indefinite strike for over 41 days, sparking strong reactions from the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the union. The strike, which began on September 19, 2025, is a result of grievances over delayed staff promotions for 2024 and 2025, as well as long-standing welfare issues.

The APC has criticized the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke for the collapse of the judiciary in the state, alleging that the prolonged strike represents a failure of the present government. According to the APC, the absence of judicial activities for over a month amounts to a violation of citizens’ rights. The party maintains that the situation has left the judiciary in a state of paralysis, affecting access to justice and inflicting hardship on legal practitioners and citizens with pending cases.

In response, the JUSUN has described the APC’s comments as political opportunism and hypocrisy. The union’s chairman, Comrade Idris Adedayo Adeniran, stated that the strike is not politically motivated but a legitimate call for justice, fair treatment, and improved welfare of judicial staff. Adeniran accused the APC of exaggerating the situation and urged the party to engage the judiciary authorities directly rather than politicizing workers’ grievances.

The strike has significant implications for the state’s justice system, with suspects languishing in police cells and correctional facilities without trial due to the total shutdown of court operations. The JUSUN has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful dialogue and urged the public to support their cause for fairness and improved working conditions within the state’s judiciary.

The Osun State government has been accused of being unconcerned about the constitutional and security implications of the strike, with the APC alleging that lawlessness and disorder have taken root as a result. The situation remains unresolved, with the JUSUN demanding that the government address their grievances and improve the welfare of judicial staff. The strike has highlighted the need for urgent attention to the state’s justice system, with the JUSUN and the government needing to find a resolution to restore access to justice for citizens.
