Nigeria Mosque Attack Condemned By Amnesty International

Failure to arrest, prosecute bandits leading to more attacks - Amnesty International on Mosque invasion

Amnesty International has denounced a recent attack on a mosque in Katsina State, Nigeria, where worshippers were targeted during dawn prayers. The incident occurred in Na’alma village, Malumfashi Local Government Area, with an unknown number of fatalities and several people reported missing. Many residents who attempted to escape are still unaccounted for, while others with severe injuries are receiving medical treatment in hospitals.

This attack comes less than two months after a similar incident in Unguwan Mantau, also in Malumfashi, where over 50 people were killed in a mosque attack. The human rights group has expressed concern over the recurring violence and criticized the federal and state governments for their response to these incidents. According to Amnesty, the authorities have consistently failed to take concrete actions to ensure the safety and justice for victims and their families.

The organization has emphasized that the lack of prosecution of those responsible for these attacks has created a culture of impunity, leaving rural communities in a state of constant fear. The Nigerian government’s inability to bring perpetrators to justice has emboldened further attacks, with Amnesty noting that “consistent failure to prosecute suspected perpetrators is emboldening impunity and leaving rural communities constantly bracing up for the next attack.”

The frequency and severity of these attacks have raised concerns about the security situation in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. The government’s response to these incidents has been criticized for being inadequate, with many calling for more decisive action to protect citizens and prevent future attacks. As the investigation into the latest incident continues, Amnesty International has urged the authorities to take immediate and effective measures to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians, particularly in vulnerable communities. The organization’s call for action highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of violence and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
