Anambra head teacher suspended for hosting political rally

Anambra head-teacher suspended for allowing political rally in school — Daily Nigerian

A primary school head teacher in Anambra, Nigeria, has been suspended indefinitely for allowing a political rally to take place within the school premises, in contravention of a state government directive. The suspension was announced by the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka.

The Anambra State Ministry of Education had earlier issued a circular on August 14, prohibiting the use of school premises for political, social, and religious gatherings. The head teacher of Community Primary School, Umunze, is accused of violating this standing order, which led to the disruption of academic activities and posed a risk to the pupils during the rally.

According to Prof. Chuma-Udeh, the state government is preparing to take legal action against the organizers of the rally, citing the disruption of learning and the endangerment of children’s lives. This development follows an incident earlier on Wednesday, where the Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Shedrack Azubuike, stopped an unapproved political rally at a primary school.

Mr. Azubuike’s action was in line with the state government’s directive banning political, religious, or social gatherings in both public and private schools during school hours. The state’s education ministry has emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and focused learning environment, free from disruptions caused by unauthorized events.

The suspension of the head teacher and the planned legal action against the rally organizers underscore the state government’s commitment to enforcing its directives and protecting the welfare of students. As the new academic term progresses, the government’s efforts to maintain order and discipline in schools will be closely watched. The incident highlights the need for stakeholders to adhere to guidelines and regulations aimed at ensuring the smooth operation of educational institutions.
