Senate confirms Bernard Doro as minister to replace Yilwatda

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Bernard Doro as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria after a brief screening session. Doro, a native of Plateau State, is the third ministerial nominee from the state to be appointed. His selection follows the resignation of Nentawe Yilwatda, also from Plateau State, and was announced by President Bola Tinubu last week.

During his Senate appearance, Doro outlined a vision for an inclusive and effective humanitarian ecosystem nationwide. He stressed the importance of impartiality and independence in the humanitarian sector and pledged to improve coordination among security agencies to better identify and support individuals affected by crises. While acknowledging the significant challenges that remain, Doro expressed confidence that technology could play a crucial role in addressing them.

The Senate’s screening lasted less than 30 minutes and consisted of a round of questioning. Senators voiced satisfaction with Doro’s qualifications and readiness to serve, then asked him to take a bow and leave. His appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the humanitarian sector, with his experience and expertise serving as valuable assets in tackling Nigeria’s humanitarian challenges.

As minister, Doro will oversee the country’s humanitarian response efforts, working closely with other government agencies and stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and effective reaction to crises. The Nigerian government has been strengthening its humanitarian response capabilities in recent years, and Doro’s appointment is seen as a key component of these efforts. With his background, he is well positioned to make a significant contribution to the sector, marking a positive step forward for the government’s work in addressing the needs of affected communities.
