Sudan Violence Escalates Near El Fasher

The United Nations Security Council has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in and around El Fasher, North Darfur, condemning the assault by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city. The council recalled its resolution 2736, which demands the RSF lift the siege of El Fasher and calls for an immediate halt to the fighting. The situation has led to devastating impacts on the civilian population, with reports of atrocities, including summary executions and arbitrary detentions, prompting the council to urge all perpetrators to be held accountable.

The council emphasized the need for all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and abide by their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law. They also called for the protection of humanitarian personnel, their premises, and assets, in accordance with international law. Furthermore, the council demanded that all parties allow and facilitate safe and unhindered humanitarian access, consistent with international law, to address the growing humanitarian crisis.

The conflict in Sudan has raised concerns about the risk of large-scale atrocities, including ethnically motivated ones. The council reiterated the priority of resuming talks to reach a lasting ceasefire and a comprehensive, inclusive, and Sudanese-owned political process. They urged all member states to refrain from external interference that could exacerbate the conflict and instability, instead supporting efforts for durable peace and abiding by their obligations under international law.

The Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan, rejecting the establishment of a parallel governing authority in areas controlled by the RSF. The council’s statement comes as the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with the international community calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The next steps will likely involve continued diplomatic efforts to facilitate a ceasefire and a return to negotiations, with the aim of finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
