Nigerian music executive Don Jazzy recounts how he nearly quit the industry after Mo’Hits— the record label he co‑founded with D’banj—collapsed in 2012 due to disagreements between the two founders. In a Rolling Stone interview, he explained that friends encouraged him to stay, prompting the creation of Mavin Records. This new label became a home for former Mo’Hits artists such as Wande Coal, Dr SID and D’Prince, while also launching the careers of fresh talents like Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks and Di’ja.
The end of Mo’Hits left a lasting impact on Don Jazzy, strengthening his resilience. He reflected, “When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me.” Over the years, Mavin Records has continued to grow, now featuring artists such as Rema, Ayra Starr and Ladipoe. In 2024, the label secured a significant investment from Universal Music Group, marking a major milestone that is expected to accelerate its expansion and boost its global presence.
Don Jazzy’s journey with Mavin Records illustrates the importance of perseverance and adaptability in the music industry. Despite setbacks, he has built a successful, enduring legacy that offers valuable lessons for artists and entrepreneurs worldwide. With a diverse roster and a commitment to innovation, Mavin Records is poised to remain a major force in shaping the sound of African music.
