Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has attributed the defection of numerous lawmakers from opposition parties to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to his administration’s commitment to inclusivity, fairness, and justice. Speaking at a mega rally in Kafanchan, where Senator Sunday Marshall Katung and three other legislators defected to the APC, Governor Sani noted that his leadership style has led to significant infrastructural development across the state.
The governor recalled that as of May 29, 2023, the opposition had 12 members in the House of Representatives, while the APC had only four. However, in the past two and a half years, 10 House of Representatives members have defected to the APC, and seven members of the state House of Assembly have also joined the party. Governor Sani argued that this trend is a testament to the inclusive nature of his government.
The defections have transformed Southern Kaduna, a region that was previously a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), into an APC haven. Governor Sani emphasized that his administration has been working to develop infrastructure, improve healthcare, education, and agriculture, and ensure that every local government benefits from these efforts. He cited examples of road projects in various local governments, including the construction of a 22-kilometer asphaltic road in Zangon Kataf and a 24-kilometer road in Sanga.
The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, represented the president at the rally and commended Governor Sani for his achievements. Gbajabiamila noted that the president’s reforms have had a positive impact on the entire country and that the best is yet to come. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, described the defection of Senator Katung and Representative Dan Amos as a “political earthquake” and praised their leadership and integrity.
The defections are seen as a significant shift in the political landscape of Kaduna State, with the APC now dominating the region. Governor Sani’s emphasis on inclusivity and development appears to have resonated with the defecting lawmakers and their supporters. As the state continues to evolve politically, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the future of Kaduna State and the APC’s national prospects.
