A Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Victor Giwa, has petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Department of State Services to investigate allegations of compromise in his ongoing trial at the Federal Capital Territory High Court. Giwa is facing charges of forgery before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie.
In an affidavit filed on October 27, 2025, Giwa requested that Justice Onwuegbuzie recuse himself from the case, citing alleged interference by Asabe Waziri, an employee of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. Giwa claims that Waziri has the backing of certain individuals in the office of the FCT High Court’s Chief Judge and enjoys favorable treatment in her cases.
The affidavit states that Giwa has no confidence in receiving a fair trial, as the outcome is allegedly predetermined. He also claims that Waziri has boasted about the court being “arranged” to secure a conviction, which would be used to revoke his law practice license. Giwa has offered to undergo a polygraph test to verify his allegations.
The case against Giwa stems from accusations of forging the letterhead of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Awa Kalu. However, Kalu has since distanced himself from the allegations, stating in a letter to the Inspector General of Police that his letterhead was not forged and that he had not filed any complaints against Giwa.
Despite Kalu’s letter, the police proceeded with charges against Giwa and his co-accused, Bukola Ibitade. Giwa’s allegations of compromise and interference have raised concerns about the integrity of the judicial process in Nigeria. The Department of State Services and the Chief Justice of Nigeria have been called upon to investigate these claims and ensure a fair trial.
The outcome of this investigation may have significant implications for Giwa’s case and the broader Nigerian justice system. As the case continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Giwa’s allegations will be substantiated and what consequences may arise from the investigation.
