The Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has assured that all candidates in the upcoming governorship election will adhere to a peace accord. Soludo, representing the candidates, made this pledge during a peace deal signing ceremony attended by all 16 candidates and their party chairmen. The event was initiated by the Kukah Centre and aimed to promote a peaceful electoral process.
According to Soludo, Anambra State has a history of intense electoral competition, but the candidates have agreed to put aside their differences and commit to a peaceful election. He emphasized that the candidates are all acquainted with each other and will come together after the election to give thanks, regardless of the outcome. Soludo encouraged his colleagues to internalize the peace accord and share it with their campaign teams, stressing the importance of transparency, due process, and integrity in the electoral process.
The Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen Abdulsalami Abukakar, represented by Gen Martin Luther Agwai, called for peace throughout the electoral process. Agwai emphasized that democracy can only thrive in an environment of restraint and respect for human life. He acknowledged the significant role of traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the media in promoting peace and unity within the community.
The peace accord signing ceremony is a significant step towards ensuring a peaceful and credible election in Anambra State. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police have been urged to cooperate in securing the electoral process and ensuring the integrity of the election. With all candidates committing to the peace accord, the stage is set for a peaceful and transparent election that reflects the will of the people.
The election is expected to be closely watched, given the state’s history of electoral competition. The peace accord signing ceremony demonstrates the candidates’ commitment to upholding democratic principles and promoting peace and stability in the state. As the election approaches, all eyes will be on Anambra State to see if the peace accord will hold and if the election will be conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
