The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has denounced the recent attacks by suspected herders in the Benue South Senatorial District, describing them as barbaric and cowardly. The attacks, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in the loss of lives, displacement of people, and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
According to reports, armed Fulani herdsmen invaded Rijo, in the Utonkon community of Ado Local Government Area, and Anwule, in the Oglewu community of Ohimini Local Government Area, targeting farmers working on their farms and villagers in their homes. The attackers used machetes and other weapons to kill several people, leaving others missing.
Senator Moro, in a statement issued by his Media Aide, Emmanuel Echeofun, expressed concern over the recurring attacks on his constituents. He called for urgent intervention from relevant government agencies to address the situation, questioning why no one has been arrested or prosecuted despite the frequent attacks on Zone C.
The senator urged security agents to take proactive measures to prevent future occurrences and ensure that those responsible for the latest attacks are brought to justice. He also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The attacks on communities in Benue State have been a persistent issue, with many calling for increased security presence and effective measures to prevent such incidents. The Nigerian government has been under pressure to address the ongoing conflict between herders and farmers, which has resulted in significant loss of life and property.
The latest attacks have highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of the conflict and ensuring the safety and security of communities in the region. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for the government to take concrete steps to prevent further violence and promote peaceful coexistence among different groups.
