PDP Board of Trustees Seeks Unity Amid Party Crisis

Court stops Wabara's suspension as PDP BoT Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has called for an end to infighting among its members, emphasizing the need for unity ahead of the party’s National Elective Convention. Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the BoT, made the appeal during a meeting at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, on Wednesday. Wabara, a former Senate President, stressed that the board would maintain neutrality and focus on mediating differences between warring factions.

The meeting was attended by key party stakeholders, including BoT Secretary Ahmed Makarafi, Jerry Gana, Senator Ben Obi, Josephine Anenih, and Zainab Maina. Also present were members of the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC), marking Damagum’s first appearance since the suspension of the Senator Anyanwu-led NWC last week.

Damagum welcomed the recent Oyo State High Court ruling, which ordered the PDP to proceed with its scheduled National Elective Convention in Ibadan. He emphasized the party’s commitment to due process and reiterated that the convention must hold as planned. The BoT also announced the establishment of a reconciliation committee to address disputes and bring together feuding members.

The committee’s formation is seen as a crucial step towards resolving the party’s internal conflicts and promoting unity ahead of the convention. Members of the BoT expressed their support for the Damagum-led NWC and reaffirmed their commitment to the party’s scheduled convention.

The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions and power struggles in recent weeks, which have threatened to undermine its chances in upcoming elections. The party’s ability to resolve its internal conflicts and present a united front will be crucial in determining its success in the electoral arena. With the National Elective Convention approaching, the PDP’s leadership is under pressure to demonstrate its capacity for unity and cohesion. The outcome of the convention will have significant implications for the party’s future and its prospects in Nigerian politics.
