Nigeria FCCPC seizes warehouses over deceptive fabric sales

FCCPC seals over 10 warehouses over infractions in Kano  — Daily Nigerian

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed over ten warehouses in Kano, Nigeria, containing fabric materials, due to alleged infractions. The commission’s director of Surveillance and Investigations, Boladale Adeyinka, stated that the enforcement exercise was conducted in response to verified intelligence about the activities of the owners.

According to Adeyinka, the commission had received information that retailers were engaging in deceptive sales practices, selling underweight and shortened fabric materials to unsuspecting consumers. The fabrics, labeled as 10 yards, were found to be nine yards or less, with consumers being charged the full price. This practice violates consumer rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

The FCCPC had conducted weeks of market surveillance and intelligence gathering, which revealed that several retailers were selling fabric materials below the standard length or measurement indicated on the products. The commission’s findings showed that consumers were being charged full price for under-measured sizes or lengths. This conduct is prohibited under Section 123 (1) of the FCCPA, which states that no retailer or supplier shall make false, misleading, or deceptive representations to consumers.

The sealed warehouses, located in various areas of Kano, include those at Nakano, Gandun Albasa Layout, and Ibrahim Taiwo Road. Adeyinka expressed concern that such practices not only exploit consumers but also distort the market and threaten fair competition. She noted that honest traders and businesses that comply with lawful standards are being undermined, which can lead to a reduction in consumer choice and the entrenchment of anti-competitive behavior.

The FCCPC’s enforcement action aims to protect consumers and promote fair competition in the market. The commission’s efforts to curb deceptive sales practices are crucial in maintaining a level playing field for businesses and ensuring that consumers receive accurate information about the products they purchase. The sealed warehouses will remain closed until the owners comply with the relevant regulations and standards. The FCCPC’s actions demonstrate its commitment to enforcing consumer protection laws and promoting a fair and competitive market in Nigeria.
