Nigeria’s Weak Diplomatic Response to Trump Criticized

Trump's threat: APC using 'funny' friends for diplomacy - Olawepo-Hashim

A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has criticized the All Progressives Congress-led government for its response to recent comments made by United States President Donald Trump. Olawepo-Hashim expressed his disappointment during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time program, stating that he was not surprised by Trump’s remarks but rather by the Nigerian government’s reaction.

According to Olawepo-Hashim, the government’s response reflected a lack of effective diplomatic engagement, which he attributed to the absence of a fully functioning ambassador in Washington for an extended period. He emphasized the importance of maintaining proper diplomatic channels, highlighting the role of an ambassador as a representative of the president in a foreign country.

Olawepo-Hashim also criticized the government’s preference for informal channels over established diplomatic frameworks, describing such approaches as unprofessional. He noted that formal structures, such as bi-national or bilateral commissions, have been paralyzed for years, leading to a decline in diplomatic cooperation with neighboring countries, including Niger Republic.

The PDP chieftain argued that the paralysis of these formal structures has weakened Nigeria’s global influence and undermined its reputation as a stabilizing force in West Africa. He accused the current administration of pursuing a reckless and incoherent foreign policy, citing previous instances where the country was pushed to the brink of a foreign conflict.

Olawepo-Hashim’s comments come amid concerns about Nigeria’s diplomatic relationships with other countries. The country’s foreign policy has been under scrutiny, with some critics arguing that it lacks a clear direction. The Nigerian government’s response to international developments, including Trump’s comments, has been seen as inadequate by some observers.

The situation highlights the need for effective diplomatic engagement and a coherent foreign policy approach. As Nigeria navigates its relationships with other countries, it is essential for the government to prioritize established diplomatic channels and maintain a strong presence in international affairs. The country’s global influence and reputation depend on its ability to engage effectively with the international community.
