The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed for the Anambra governorship election of their safety and prompt payment of election duty allowances. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave this assurance in an interview with newsmen in Awka, stating that the welfare and safety of corps members serving as election ad hoc staff are of utmost importance to the commission and security agencies.
According to Amupitan, the corps members are key stakeholders in the success of the election, and efforts are being made to ensure their distinction from others by using them in uniform. He also emphasized that the commission has made arrangements for the payment of their allowances, stating that everything needed for the Anambra election has been provided.
On security arrangements, Amupitan noted that the Nigerian Police, in coordination with other security agencies, has assured INEC of its commitment to protecting people on election duties. He explained that security personnel are already conducting reconnaissance and mop-up operations in various areas to ensure the safety of voters, poll officials, and corps members.
The INEC chairman expressed confidence in the security measures put in place, stating that everything has been done to ensure security everywhere. The Anambra governorship election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, and the deployment of NYSC members as ad hoc staff is a crucial aspect of the electoral process.
The assurance of safety and prompt payment of allowances is expected to boost the morale of the corps members, who will play a vital role in the conduct of the election. The success of the election will depend on the effective collaboration between INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders, including the NYSC members. As the election approaches, all eyes are on the authorities to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful process.
