Anambra Governorship Election 2025: Voting Begins

Our sustained sensitization reason for high voter registration in Anambra - ANCISRO

The Anambra State governorship election is scheduled to take place today, Saturday, November 8, 2025. Anambra is one of eight states in Nigeria that hold elections outside of the general election timetable, alongside Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo, Osun, Ondo, Edo, and Ekiti.

The state’s off-cycle governorship election was established in 2003, following a court ruling that removed Chris Ngige of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from office and installed Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as governor after a two-year tribunal case. This year, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 16 candidates to contest the election.

The candidates include Onyeeze Chidi (A), Nweke Ezechukwu-Japhet (AA), Ifemeludike Chioma Grace (AAC), Nwosu Chima John (ADC), Ukachukwu Nicholas (APC), Soludo Charles (APGA), Otti Cyprian Echezona (APM), Nweke Christopher Chukwudubem (APP), Okeke Chika Jerry (BP), Moghalu George (LP), Onyejgbu Geoffrey (NNPP), Ndidi Christy Olieh (NRM), Ezenwafor Jude (PDP), Chukwurah Vincent (SDP), Chukwuma Paul Chukwuka (YPP), and Ugwoji Uchenna (ZLP).

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has reassured the public of the commission’s readiness for the election, stating that 24,000 personnel have been deployed to facilitate the polls. Voting will take place in 5,718 out of 5,720 polling units, with the remaining two units excluded due to a lack of registered voters. Incumbent governor Soludo is a major contender in the governorship race.

As the election gets underway, the people of Anambra State will be choosing their next leader. The outcome of this election is significant, as it will determine the direction of the state for the next four years. The international community will be watching the election closely, with many interested in the democratic process in Nigeria.
