APC Candidate Alleges Vote Buying in Anambra Election

Anambra Guber: Ukachukwu expresses optimism, tasks APC leaders to deliver victory

The Anambra governorship election is underway in Nigeria, with reports of vote buying and intimidation of party agents emerging. Nicholas Ukachukwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, has cast his vote and expressed concerns about the electoral process. Speaking after voting at his polling unit in Osumenyi Ward 2, Ukachukwu described the situation as a threat to democracy, citing instances of vote buying and the intimidation of his party’s agents.

According to Ukachukwu, one of his agents was assaulted during the voting exercise. He emphasized that the practice of vote buying undermines the democratic process, stating that “if there’s no seller, there cannot be a buyer.” The APC candidate also noted that citizens who sell their votes lose their voice and cannot complain later. He urged society to take responsibility for encouraging this practice.

Regarding the situation in Ihiala, a known flashpoint in the state, Ukachukwu reported that there had been no major violence or casualties so far. However, the election has caused disruptions in Onitsha, with security officials restricting movement on the Niger Bridge to ensure the safe transport of election materials and personnel.

Voting is ongoing across Anambra’s 21 local government areas, with over 5,700 polling units open. As of 8:30 a.m., accreditation and voting had commenced peacefully in areas such as Fegge Community Primary School, Onitsha. The election is being closely watched, and the outcome is expected to have significant implications for the state’s governance.

The Anambra governorship election is the latest in a series of elections in Nigeria, which has faced challenges related to electoral integrity and voter turnout. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has implemented various measures to ensure the credibility of the process, including the use of technology to accredit voters and transmit results.

As the voting continues, the focus will be on the ability of the electoral authorities to maintain order and ensure that the process is free and fair. The outcome of the election will be closely monitored, and any irregularities or disputes are likely to be thoroughly investigated. With the electoral process still underway, the people of Anambra await the outcome, hoping for a peaceful and credible conclusion to the election.
