Max Verstappen’s Brazilian GP Qualifying Session Ends in Disappointment
Four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen suffered a shocking elimination in the first qualifying session (Q1) at the 2025 Brazilian Grand Prix, securing a 16th starting position. The Dutch driver, who trails championship leader Lando Norris by 36 points, had a disappointing session at Interlagos, a track where he has previously excelled.
Verstappen’s struggles began during the sprint qualifying and sprint race, where he complained about the ride quality and balance of his Red Bull car. Despite making changes after the sprint, the issues persisted, and he failed to improve his performance in Q1. After his penultimate lap, Verstappen reported that the ride quality was slightly better but the car was still sliding, particularly in Turn 1.
The Red Bull driver’s final attempt did not yield the desired results, and he was eliminated from Q2 contention. Fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with some conceding that the championship fight was over. Reactions ranged from congratulations to Lando Norris on his presumed championship win to criticism of the Red Bull team for failing to provide Verstappen with a competitive setup.
Verstappen’s team radio communications during Q1 revealed his frustration with the car’s performance. After his final lap, he exclaimed, “Oh my god mate, the car and the ride is a tiny bit better but now sliding in Turn 1.” His race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, offered assistance, but Verstappen responded, “No, I don’t really know what to tell you.” The Dutch driver’s last message was, “Yeah, I have no grip, zero. Brilliant!”
In contrast, championship contenders Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri advanced to the third qualifying session (Q3), solidifying their positions in the championship standings. Verstappen’s early elimination has significant implications for the championship, and the Red Bull team will need to regroup and reassess their strategy to support their driver’s title bid.
