The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the recent Anambra governorship election, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, has disputed the victory of Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Ukachukwu alleged that the election was marred by violence and intimidation against his supporters, resulting in injuries, destruction of property, and loss of vehicles.
In a press briefing in Awka, Ukachukwu stated that he has initiated consultations with his supporters and party stakeholders to determine his next course of action. He expressed gratitude to his team members, describing them as “gallant soldiers” and “winners” despite the challenges they faced. Ukachukwu claimed that some of his agents were abducted by opponents and detained until after the election, while others were accused of vote buying when attempting to pay party agents.
According to Ukachukwu, the election results do not reflect the true outcome, citing the significant number of votes he received as evidence of the APC’s growing presence in Anambra. He received approximately 99,000 votes, which he believes demonstrates the party’s influence in the state. Ukachukwu argued that it would be illogical for him to engage in vote buying, given the incumbent governor’s control of the state treasury.
Ukachukwu’s supporters reportedly faced harassment, with one female supporter’s house being burned down in Anambra East. He emphasized that the APC can no longer be disregarded in Anambra, given the substantial number of votes he received. The party’s next steps will be determined after consultations with stakeholders and a thorough review of the election process.
The disputed election outcome has significant implications for the political landscape in Anambra, with the APC seeking to establish itself as a major force in the state. As Ukachukwu and his party weigh their options, the situation remains closely watched by political observers and stakeholders in the region. The APC’s ability to garner a substantial number of votes in the election underscores the growing competition in Anambra’s political arena.
