Kano lawmaker, Abdulmumin Jibrin dumps NNPP for APC

Abdulmumin Jibrin, a federal lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced the move on Facebook, saying that his supporters had unanimously decided to abandon the NNPP and its affiliate, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, in favor of the ruling party. Jibrin also pledged his full support for President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election bid in 2027.

According to Jibrin, thousands of constituents gathered in his hometown of Kofa, Bebeji, Kano, to endorse his decision and to affirm their backing of the APC and President Tinubu’s second term. The defection comes two months after Jibrin resigned from the NNPP following his expulsion over alleged anti‑party activities and non‑payment of dues—allegations he denied. He described the expulsion as “shocking and unjustified,” arguing that an interview cited by the party did not merit such a sanction and that the NNPP denied him a fair hearing and due process. Despite maintaining that he had never neglected his membership dues, Jibrin chose not to contest the expulsion in court.

Jibrin’s return to the APC, a party he previously belonged to, marks a significant shift in his political affiliation and could affect the political dynamics in his constituency and the broader Nigerian landscape. His move adds to the APC’s numbers in the House of Representatives, potentially strengthening the party’s legislative presence. As the 2027 general elections approach, Jibrin’s endorsement of President Tinubu may influence his constituents’ voting choices and bolster the APC’s campaign efforts.
