ODM celebrates 20th anniversary in Kenya

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is set to commemorate its 20th anniversary with a series of events in Mombasa, starting with a Disability League Breakfast on Friday. The three-day celebration, which was initially postponed in October, will honor the late party leader Raila Odinga, who is regarded as the Father of Modern Democracy in Kenya.

According to Interim Party Leader Senator Oburu Oginga, the ODM@20 commemoration will reflect on the party’s two decades of political struggle, sacrifice, and service to the Kenyan people. The event will also reaffirm the party’s vision for the future and feature a series of thematic events, including a Founders’ Dinner on Saturday evening at Sarova Whitesands, which will be attended by President William Ruto.

The celebrations will kick off with a special sitting of the National Governing Council (NGC) on Thursday, focusing on strengthening party structures and charting ODM’s strategic direction. On Friday, the party will host a Disability League Breakfast, followed by Side-by-Side Summits featuring the ODM Women’s Summit and ODM Youth Summit. A Youth Concert will also be held in the evening to celebrate two decades of activism and political engagement.

On Saturday, a celebration of Raila Odinga’s vision, achievements, and legacy will be held at Mama Ngina Waterfront, followed by the ODM Founders’ Dinner. The event will bring together leaders, allies, and friends of ODM to honor the party’s journey and reaffirm their commitment to its ideals. The commemorations will conclude with an Inter-Religious Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, paying tribute to the life, leadership, and legacy of the party’s late leader.

Senator Oburu Oginga described the anniversary as a “solemn yet celebratory moment,” noting that the party’s journey has been defined by resilience, reform, and renewal. He emphasized the importance of securing the party’s legacy and future, stating, “Together, we shall secure the legacy. Together, we shall secure the future.” The ODM@20 commemoration is expected to be a significant event in Kenya’s political landscape, marking a major milestone in the party’s history and reaffirming its commitment to democracy, equality, and social justice.
