EEDC launches free prepaid meter distribution programme

Pay your electricity bills or face disconnection - Enugu Disco to residents

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has initiated the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution under the Metre Acquisition Fund (MAF) metering program, also known as “Tranche B”. This program, established by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), aims to address the existing metering gap in the sector and eliminate estimated billing.

A total of 13,335 customers of EEDC, including those of its subsidiary companies, will benefit from this phase of the program, which commenced on November 2, 2025, with a Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise. The program is funded through the Metre Acquisition Fund and is free for customers, with no payment required for the installation of the meters.

According to Emeka Ezeh, Group Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, the metering initiative prioritizes customers under Band “A” feeders across the South-East region. Customers are advised to verify and update their contact information by visiting the Customer Service Unit at the distribution company’s office serving them. Ezeh emphasized that the program is designed to improve service transparency and customer satisfaction.

Ezeh noted that EEDC had previously completed “Tranche A” of the MAF metering program, which successfully metered 13,614 Band “A” customers. The company plans to systematically close the existing metering gap across the network, with attention shifting to Band “B” customers once all Band “A” customers are metered.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently approved a N28 billion bailout for the second phase of the MAF program. Ezeh warned against bypassing the prepaid meters, emphasizing that such actions would undermine the efforts to instill efficiency and revenue protection. Customers are encouraged to report any instances of meter bypass, energy theft, or other illegal activities.

The rollout of the free prepaid meters is a significant step towards improving the efficiency and transparency of the electricity distribution sector in Nigeria. As the program progresses, it is expected to have a positive impact on customer satisfaction and revenue collection for the distribution companies.
