A former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eddy Olafeso, has accused those opposing the party’s national convention of attempting to establish a one-party system in Nigeria. Olafeso made this allegation while appearing on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television, in response to the Federal High Court’s order to stop the PDP’s national convention scheduled for November 15 to 16 in Ibadan.
The court’s decision was met with criticism from Olafeso, who described it as an extreme example of judicial overreach. He stated that the restraining order did not come as a surprise, suggesting that a group is working to destroy the party. Olafeso expressed confidence that the party would not be deterred by the ruling and that the convention would still take place.
According to Olafeso, the opposition to the PDP’s convention is motivated by ulterior motives aimed at weakening the party and ultimately establishing a one-party state in Nigeria. He emphasized that the party would not be swayed by these efforts, affirming that good would ultimately prevail over evil.
The PDP had planned to hold its national convention to address internal party issues and reposition itself for future elections. However, the court’s order has thrown a wrench into these plans, raising concerns about the party’s ability to hold a successful convention. Despite this setback, Olafeso remains optimistic that the party will find a way to move forward and hold its convention as scheduled.
The development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the PDP, one of Nigeria’s main opposition parties, as it navigates internal conflicts and external pressures. The party’s ability to hold a successful convention will be crucial in determining its future trajectory and its ability to effectively challenge the ruling party in upcoming elections. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the PDP will respond to the court’s order and whether it will be able to overcome the obstacles in its path.
