A member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, Ejiofor Onyia, emphasized the importance of the party’s upcoming convention in electing new leaders and restoring its former glory. Speaking on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” program, Onyia addressed the party’s current divisions and the need for unified leadership.
The PDP has been embroiled in internal conflicts, resulting in a split into two factions: one loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and another chaired by Umar Damagum. Despite these challenges, Onyia remains optimistic about the party’s future, citing the Supreme Court’s decision to respect the party’s autonomy in its internal affairs. He referenced a previous court case concerning the party’s secretaryship, which the Supreme Court ultimately resolved by ruling that it had no jurisdiction over internal matters, thereby clearing the way for the convention.
According to Onyia, the convention will take place this weekend in Ibadan, where new executives will be elected to lead the party and restore its prominence. The event is seen as a crucial step toward resolving internal conflicts and unifying the membership. With the party’s current divisions, the election of new leaders is expected to bring stability and direction to the PDP.
Onyia’s statement reflects the party’s commitment to moving forward and regaining its position as a major political force. As the convention approaches, all eyes will be on the PDP to see if it can overcome its challenges and emerge stronger and more united.
