The humanitarian situation in Northern State, Sudan, has deteriorated sharply as roughly 57,000 people displaced from Darfur and Kordofan seek refuge in two camps: Azhari Khalafallah Camp in Al‑Afadd and the camp in Al‑Dabba town. Dr. Kawthar Jaafar, Humanitarian Aid Commissioner in Al‑Dabba locality, reports that many of the displaced, including numerous children, have endured harsh conditions; some arrived with injuries and signs of malnutrition.
The number of displaced persons has risen dramatically. Initially, 200 families were received before the fall of El‑Fashir; subsequently, an additional 650 families—about 32,000 individuals—arrived. Dr. Jaafar expects further influxes, noting that 50,000 people have fled El‑Fashir and another 7,000 have escaped violence in Darfur and Kordofan.
To address the crisis, authorities have provided about 500 tents in the first phase and plan another 500 in the second phase. Essential food, medical supplies, and sustainable water sources are being secured, with the Northern State Water Authority implementing a water project. Nevertheless, a clear plan for schooling displaced children remains elusive, despite ongoing consultations and commitments. The two camps currently host around 250 school‑aged children and 310 preschool‑aged children.
Al‑Hassan Ibrahim, head of the Services and Emergency Committee at Azhari Khalafallah Camp, says seven committees have been formed to organize camp operations, covering services, health, and environmental management. Various organizations, including Qatar Charity and Sadaqat, have contributed food baskets, shelter, and medical supplies.
President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel‑Fattah Al‑Burhan, has ordered that water services be sustained, and a high‑quality borehole is being drilled in coordination with the Northern State Water Authority. Northern State Minister of Culture and Information, Al‑Bagir Okasha, praised the Ministry of Culture, Information, and Tourism for dispatching a media convoy to assess the conditions of displaced persons. The state has pledged to provide necessary services until the displaced can return home and the region is liberated from rebellion.
The situation remains a pressing concern, and the international community is urged to support efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Northern State, Sudan.
