Sheikh Gumi Slams Arrest Calls Over Banditry Comments

"That's the work of Shaytan" - Ahmad Gumi reacts as Tinubu pardons Maryam Sanda

Renowned Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi has responded to calls for his arrest, defending his interactions with bandits as part of efforts to address national security concerns. In a statement, Sheikh Gumi described his critics as “spineless, irresponsible, and unpatriotic” individuals who prioritize outrage over truth. He emphasized that his engagement with bandits aims to secure peace and has been conducted with the knowledge and approval of authorities.

Sheikh Gumi recalled a notable intervention in January 2021, where he led a peace initiative in Sabon Garin Yadi forest, Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Accompanied by the then Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, the meeting brought together over 600 armed bandits and their commanders. The cleric stated that the goal of the meeting was to persuade the bandits to surrender their weapons, engage in dialogue, and cease attacks on local communities.

According to Sheikh Gumi, the negotiation was transparent and legitimate, with the authorities’ approval and knowledge. He argued that his critics have chosen to politicize his peace efforts rather than focus on addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. The cleric emphasized that he has committed no crime by engaging with bandits in an attempt to secure peace, and that the loudest voices calling for his arrest are driven by bigotry, ignorance, and intolerance for differing viewpoints.

Sheikh Gumi’s comments come amid ongoing concerns about national security and the role of community leaders in addressing insecurity. The cleric’s efforts to engage with bandits have been met with both support and criticism, highlighting the complexities of addressing the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria. As the country continues to grapple with security challenges, Sheikh Gumi’s remarks underscore the need for nuanced approaches to conflict resolution and the importance of considering multiple perspectives in addressing national security concerns.
