Emirates has placed an order for 65 Boeing 777X planes, valued at $38 billion, in a significant vote of confidence for the US manufacturer. The deal was announced on the first day of the Dubai Airshow and includes deliveries scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2027. The agreement also comprises 130 GE9X engines from General Electric.
The order reinforces Emirates’ position as the largest customer for the Boeing 777, with a total of 270 777X, 10 777 freighters, and 35 Boeing 787s on order. According to Emirates Group Chairman and Chief Executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the long-term commitment will support hundreds of thousands of high-value manufacturing jobs.
As the world’s most profitable airline, Emirates has announced $2.9 billion in half-year profits. The airline, wholly owned by the Dubai government, has expressed frustration in the past over repeated delays to deliveries of the 777X. However, Sheikh Ahmed assured that each aircraft on order has been carefully factored into Emirates’ growth plans.
The Boeing 777X has faced significant delays and safety concerns, including a series of incidents such as the Air India disaster in June, which killed 260 people. The delivery delays have forced Emirates to refurbish its existing fleet, including its Airbus A380s, which are now out of production.
The latest order includes the option to upgrade to larger versions of the 777X that are still under development. With 315 Boeing wide-body planes on order, Emirates has demonstrated its commitment to expanding its fleet. The deal is a significant boost for Boeing, which has been battling to regain momentum in the aviation industry.
The order is expected to have a positive impact on the aviation industry, with Emirates’ commitment to the Boeing 777X providing a much-needed vote of confidence. As the airline continues to expand its fleet, it is likely to have a significant effect on the global aviation market. With the delivery of the new planes scheduled to start in 2027, Emirates is poised to maintain its position as a leading airline in the industry.
