Bandits: Emir Sanusi warns against peace deals enabling attacks

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has cautioned communities in Katsina State against entering into peace agreements with bandits that could inadvertently grant these armed groups the freedom to attack neighboring states. This warning comes as peace deals have become a common practice in parts of Northern Nigeria, particularly in Katsina State, where bandits have been known to attend dialogue meetings while openly carrying sophisticated weapons.

In these areas, local residents have expressed concern that each time a peace deal is announced in a local government area, communities become braced for possible attacks by the same armed groups, leading to heightened fear in neighboring communities and border states. This has created a sense of uncertainty and insecurity among the populace.

During a recent visit to communities in Bagwai and Shanono Local Government Areas of Kano State that were attacked by bandits, Sanusi advised that while peace arrangements may reduce violence locally, they must not create a safe corridor for gunmen to cross into other states and unleash terror. He emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging residents to promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.

The Emir commended the Kano State Government for its proactive measures aimed at curbing the infiltration of bandits into the state. His visit was to commiserate with victims and their families, underscoring the need for collective action against the growing insecurity in the region.

The issue of banditry and the pursuit of peace deals in Northern Nigeria highlights the complex security challenges facing the region. As efforts to address these challenges continue, it is crucial that any solutions do not inadvertently compromise the safety of neighboring communities. The call for vigilance and cooperation with security agencies is a step towards ensuring that the region can effectively combat the threat posed by armed groups. By prioritizing security and stability, the hope is to create an environment where peace can be sustained without compromising the safety of any community.
