The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Convention Organising Committee Secretary, Ben Obi, has confirmed that the party’s convention was properly constituted. Obi made this statement during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme, following a clash between rival factions at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
According to Obi, the outgoing National Working Committee (NWC) had 18 members, with Chairman Umar Damagum having the support of 13 members, compared to four opposing him. The National Executive Committee (NEC) had informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the convention at its 102nd meeting on August 25, 2025, providing the required 21-day notice.
INEC acknowledged receipt of the notification, and the police, as well as the Department of State Services (DSS), were duly informed. Obi emphasized that these agencies participated in the convention, underscoring the legitimacy of the event. The PDP secretary’s statement aims to clarify the situation and reassure stakeholders about the convention’s validity.
The clash between rival factions at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja had raised concerns about the party’s internal dynamics. However, Obi’s explanation highlights the committee’s efforts to ensure a smooth and legally compliant process. The participation of INEC, the police, and the DSS in the convention demonstrates the party’s commitment to transparency and adherence to regulatory requirements.
As the PDP moves forward, the confirmation of the convention’s legitimacy is likely to have significant implications for the party’s internal politics and its preparations for future elections. The party’s ability to manage its internal conflicts and maintain a united front will be crucial in the face of mounting political competition. With the convention’s validity established, the PDP can now focus on rebuilding and strengthening its structures, ultimately enhancing its chances of success in upcoming elections.
