PDP Slams Tinubu’s Canceled Trips Amid Nigeria Insecurity

PDP to hold special Expanded National Caucus meeting Monday

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the cancellation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s planned trips to South Africa and Angola, citing the move as inadequate to address Nigeria’s deepening security crisis. In a statement released on Thursday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong described the decision as a “superficial gesture” that fails to confront the escalating insecurity across the country.

The president’s decision was announced amid widespread outrage over the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State. Ememobong argued that the gesture, while appearing sympathetic, does little to address the root causes of the crisis. He suggested that if the presidency is genuinely committed to tackling insecurity, President Tinubu should temporarily relocate to affected areas, such as Kebbi State and other parts of Northern Nigeria.

According to Ememobong, such a move would challenge security agencies to take more decisive action and boost the morale of troops on the frontlines. As the Commander-in-Chief, the president should not remain in the comfort of the Presidential Villa while Nigerians, including the abducted schoolgirls, face uncertainty and fear.

The PDP also drew attention to recent attacks in Kwara State, highlighting the daily reality of fear faced by Nigerians. The party accused the administration of responding with denials, rationalizations, and empty assurances, rather than taking concrete steps to address the security challenges.

The cancellation of the president’s trips has sparked debate about the government’s approach to tackling insecurity. With Nigeria facing a protracted security crisis, the opposition party’s criticism underscores the need for more effective and sustained efforts to protect citizens and restore stability. As the situation continues to unfold, the government’s response will be closely watched by Nigerians and the international community alike.
