A significant defection has taken place in Kano State, Nigeria, where at least 774 members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Rimin Gado Local Government Area. The new members were welcomed into the APC by Rabiu Bichi, Managing Director of the Hadejia‑Jam’are River Basin Development Authority, on Friday.
Bichi praised the defectors, asserting that the APC is the only party capable of delivering meaningful development in Nigeria. He highlighted several projects launched by President Bola Tinubu in the northern region, noting that more than 18 major initiatives worth billions of naira have already been completed in Kano State alone. While acknowledging that some state governments have redirected development funds to other sectors, Bichi assured the newcomers that the APC’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is producing tangible results, including economic recovery and improved food security through agricultural programs. He promised that the new members would be fully integrated into the party and treated as long‑standing supporters.
The leader of the defectors, Mohammad Karofin‑Yashi, explained that they chose the APC because of its commendable development initiatives. He expressed confidence that the APC will elevate Kano and the nation to greater heights and pledged to secure the support of additional NNPP members who are expected to defect soon.
This mass defection marks a notable shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially in Kano State, a key APC stronghold. The influx of former NNPP members is likely to strengthen the party’s support base in the region and could influence the outcome of future elections. As Nigeria continues to grapple with political and economic challenges, observers will closely monitor the APC’s ability to attract new members and fulfill its development promises.
