APC Affirms Suspension of Gbenga Daniel

The All Progressives Congress in Ward 4, Sabo, Sagamu, has reaffirmed the indefinite suspension of former governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, for alleged anti-party activities. The party maintains that the suspension remains in full force, despite claims that it has been quashed. According to the party’s secretary, Aduroja Oluwole, the National Working Committee lacks the authority to overturn the suspension, which was imposed by the ward executives in accordance with the party’s constitution.

The suspension was imposed due to Daniel’s alleged refusal to honour invitations to defend himself before an investigation panel. The party claims that Daniel engaged in activities inimical to the interests of the APC and its candidates during the last general elections, including attempting to obstruct justice during the Election Petition Tribunal sittings. The party’s grievances with Daniel date back to the 2019 elections, when he allegedly acted in defiance of the party.

The party’s stance is that the National Working Committee’s power to suspend members does not override the disciplinary actions taken by executives at the ward, local government, state, or zonal levels. The party’s constitution allows for suspension, but the decision is subject to appeal, not review by the National Working Committee. Therefore, the directive to review or nullify the suspension is deemed misplaced and without foundation in the party’s constitution.

Daniel’s spokesperson, Steve Oliyide, has denied the allegations, describing the suspension as politically motivated by Governor Dapo Abiodun to block Daniel from contesting the 2027 Ogun East senatorial seat. Oliyide claims that Daniel actively supported the APC during the Remo by-election and contributed financially to the campaign, despite being sidelined by the state leadership. The spokesperson also alleged that Abiodun’s hostility towards Daniel began when he indicated interest in the senatorial race in 2022.

The suspension has sparked controversy, with questions raised about its legality, given that Daniel is registered in a different ward. The party’s decision to uphold the suspension highlights the ongoing power struggle within the APC in Ogun State. The development is significant, as it may have implications for the 2027 elections and the party’s internal dynamics. The situation is likely to continue to unfold, with potential repercussions for the party’s unity and electoral prospects.
