Gbenga Daniel

The All Progressives Congress in Ward 4, Sabo, Sagamu, has reaffirmed the indefinite suspension of former governor and Ogun East senator Gbenga Daniel for alleged anti‑party activities. Party secretary Aduroja Oluwole stressed that the suspension remains in full force despite claims that it has been quashed. He explained that the National Working Committee lacks the authority to overturn a suspension imposed by ward executives in accordance with the party’s constitution.

The suspension was triggered by Daniel’s alleged refusal to honor invitations to defend himself before an investigation panel. The party alleges that he engaged in activities inimical to the interests of the APC and its candidates during the last general elections, including attempts to obstruct justice at the Election Petition Tribunal sittings. Grievances against Daniel date back to the 2019 elections, when he is said to have acted in defiance of the party.

According to the APC, the National Working Committee’s power to suspend members does not override disciplinary actions taken by executives at the ward, local government, state, or zonal levels. While the party’s constitution permits suspension, the decision is subject to appeal, not review by the National Working Committee. Consequently, any directive to review or nullify the suspension is deemed misplaced and without constitutional basis.

Daniel’s spokesperson, Steve Oliyide, denied the allegations, describing the suspension as politically motivated by Governor Dapo Abiodun to block Daniel from contesting the 2027 Ogun East senatorial seat. Oliyide claimed that Daniel actively supported the APC during the Remo by‑election and contributed financially to the campaign, despite being sidelined by the state leadership. He also alleged that Abiodun’s hostility began when Daniel indicated interest in the senatorial race in 2022.

The suspension has sparked controversy, raising questions about its legality since Daniel is registered in a different ward. The party’s decision to uphold the suspension highlights an ongoing power struggle within the APC in Ogun State. This development is significant, as it may affect the 2027 elections and the party’s internal dynamics, with potential repercussions for unity and electoral prospects.
