UN chief António Guterres calls on G20 leaders to tackle trade inequalities

United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres has urged G20 leaders to use their influence to dismantle trade barriers that consistently disadvantage developing countries. Speaking in Johannesburg ahead of the summit, the UN chief stressed the need for action to correct these inequalities and injustices. He pledged that the UN Secretariat will work to ensure effective representation for developing nations, while acknowledging that the UN itself has limited capacity to drive institutional reforms such as changes to the Security Council or the International Monetary Fund.

The G20 summit, set to take place in Africa for the first time, has adopted “solidarity, equality and sustainability” as its motto under the South African presidency. Global inequality is expected to dominate the two‑day agenda. Guterres called on member states to guarantee trade‑free access to their markets for the poorest countries, emphasizing that removing trade barriers is essential for promoting economic growth and development.

The summit provides a platform for world leaders to discuss and potentially implement policies aimed at reducing global inequality. With the focus on solidarity, equality and sustainability, discussions are likely to centre on solutions that foster economic growth in developing nations. The emphasis on inequality is especially significant given the stark disparities in economic development between countries and South Africa’s own domestic challenges.

As the G20 convenes, the international community will watch closely to see how leaders respond to the UN chief’s call to action. The outcomes of the summit could have far‑reaching implications for global economic development and trade policies, particularly for developing countries. With the UN Secretariat committed to promoting equality and justice, the summit offers an opportunity for leaders to collaborate on pressing global challenges and advance sustainable development.
