The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has announced his withdrawal from the party’s 2026 governorship primary in Osun State. This decision comes less than three weeks before the scheduled primary on December 13. Basiru made the announcement in Osogbo, the state capital, during the inauguration of Alubarika House, the secretariat of his political movement.
Basiru, who had been consulting with party leaders at ward and local government levels, cited his responsibilities as National Secretary and the need to prioritize his current role. He stated that after consulting with stakeholders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he decided not to contest the governorship election. Basiru emphasized that his decision does not signify a withdrawal from the party’s progressive vision, but rather a renewed commitment to support emerging leaders in the APC.
The APC national scribe also inaugurated the Alubarika House, which will serve as a meeting point for the movement and a venue for empowerment programs. He donated N50m as a take-off grant for planned initiatives. With Basiru’s withdrawal, about 13 aspirants remain in the race for the party’s ticket, including former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, and former Senate Committee chairman on Rules and Business, Senator Babajide Omoworare.
The development is significant as it comes ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Osun State. The APC primary is scheduled to take place on December 13, and the party is expected to announce its candidate soon after. The election is seen as a crucial test for the APC, which is seeking to maintain its hold on the state. With Basiru’s withdrawal, the party’s leadership will likely face increased scrutiny as it selects its candidate for the election.
The APC’s decision-making process is expected to be closely watched, given the number of aspirants still in the race. The party’s ability to select a candidate who can unite its members and appeal to a broader electorate will be crucial in determining its chances of success in the 2026 election. As the party moves forward with its primary, it remains to be seen how Basiru’s withdrawal will impact the outcome and the party’s prospects in the election.
