Mark Carney, speaking at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, said the global economy’s “center of gravity” is shifting. He warned Washington not to overestimate its role in international affairs, noting that many issues can be resolved without U.S. involvement. Carney made these remarks on the sidelines of the summit, which took place over the weekend in South Africa.
The United States was absent from the meeting after President Donald Trump cited accusations of genocide against white farmers in South Africa as his reason for boycotting. Despite the U.S. boycott, the G20 issued a declaration on Sunday. Carney emphasized that the gathering still represented three‑quarters of the world’s population, two‑thirds of global GDP, and three‑quarters of world trade, and that decisions made by the members remain highly consequential.
He also highlighted Canada’s efforts to deepen ties with countries such as South Africa, India, and China. Russian presidential aide Maksim Oreshkin, who led Moscow’s delegation, called the summit a success, pointing to constructive communications with “friendly nations” and even receiving proposals for economic cooperation from “unfriendly” ones.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had earlier said the G20 “is moving forward” and “will not be bullied,” describing the U.S. decision to boycott as “their loss.” The summit’s outcome underscores the evolving dynamics of the global economy, with emerging economies playing an increasingly prominent role. As the economic landscape continues to shift, international cooperation and diplomacy are likely to become even more essential.
