Akwa Ibom Police Meet Stakeholders Over Insecurity

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has convened a stakeholders’ security meeting to address the recent surge in insecurity in parts of Nigeria. Commissioner of Police Mohammed Baba Azare led the gathering, which included representatives from traditional rulers, religious leaders, market and transport unions, student unions, and community groups. The meeting aimed to review the state’s security situation and strengthen collaborative efforts to maintain peace and stability.

Azare debunked online reports claiming that insurgents and Boko Haram terrorists have infiltrated Akwa Ibom, stating that such false reports can instill fear among residents. He reassured that the state remains peaceful and secure, with the police working closely with other security agencies to maintain robust patrols, effective surveillance, and intelligence-driven operations.

The commissioner expressed concern over the spread of fake news and unverified security alerts on social media, which can cause panic and undermine public confidence. He emphasized the need for communities to take ownership of security by exposing criminal elements, including those involved in armed robbery, cultism, and vandalism. Azare noted that shielding or protecting criminals can compromise community safety and urged traditional and religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations to work closely with the police to sustain the state’s peaceful environment.

Stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Bishop Chris Nyong, and the Chairman of the Centre for Human Right and Accountability Network, Franklyn Isong, appreciated the police command’s efforts to ensure peace and safety in the state. They made key observations and commitments to strengthen security collaboration and pledged to support initiatives aimed at sustaining peace and security.

The meeting reinforced the importance of collaboration between the police and community stakeholders in maintaining security. With the police committed to robust security measures and stakeholders pledging to support these efforts, Akwa Ibom State is poised to continue enjoying a peaceful and stable environment. The police command’s proactive approach to addressing security concerns and debunking false reports demonstrates its commitment to maintaining public trust and safety.
