Nigeria Customs Introduces Compulsory Drug Testing

The Nigeria Customs Service has introduced compulsory drug testing for all new recruits as part of its ongoing recruitment exercise. Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi announced the new requirement at the closing session of the CGC’s 2025 Conference in Abuja, emphasizing the need to prevent individuals with substance abuse issues from joining the Service.

The directive, which takes effect immediately, aims to ensure that fresh recruits are free from substance abuse tendencies that could compromise their judgment, security responsibilities, or operational integrity. Serving personnel will also undergo screening as the agency works towards becoming a fully drug-free institution. According to Adeniyi, the measure is designed to prevent the Service from spending resources on rehabilitating personnel with substance abuse issues.

Adeniyi stressed that there will be no compromise on the new requirement, ensuring that every new officer is tested before joining the Service. This move is part of the agency’s efforts to maintain a high level of professionalism and integrity within its ranks. The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and behavior, and the introduction of compulsory drug testing is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

The decision to introduce drug testing is also in line with the Service’s efforts to enhance its operational effectiveness and security responsibilities. By ensuring that all personnel are free from substance abuse, the agency can better perform its duties and maintain the trust of the public. The move is also expected to contribute to the overall improvement of the Service’s image and reputation, both locally and internationally.

The introduction of compulsory drug testing is a significant development in the Nigeria Customs Service’s ongoing recruitment exercise. As the agency continues to work towards becoming a fully drug-free institution, it is likely that other measures will be introduced to support this goal. The Service’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct and behavior is a positive step towards maintaining the trust and confidence of the public.
