Lagos State Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has emphasized the need for the 2026 budget to align with the people’s aspirations and address their most pressing social and economic needs. This statement was made during the formal presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos Assembly complex. The proposed budget, valued at ₦4.237 trillion, has been tagged the “Budget of Shared Prosperity.”

According to Obasa, the budget should focus on reinforcing economic resilience, improving welfare, strengthening security, and driving long-lasting infrastructure development across all communities in the state. He highlighted that Lagos’ current status is a result of hard work, creativity, and laws that encourage innovation and excellence. The speaker noted that the Assembly has recorded significant growth under his leadership, with over 100 laws and 1,500 resolutions passed in ten years.

Obasa commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team for crafting a comprehensive budget that reflects Lagos’ pursuit of growth and inclusive development. He emphasized that the state’s strength is built on unity, deliberate planning, inclusive policies, and responsible governance, which are essential for guiding decisions on the proposed 2026 spending plan.

The speaker pointed out that the Assembly has consistently supported the executive by passing laws aimed at improving residents’ quality of life, including legislation that supports socio-economic expansion, local government reforms, and stronger institutional frameworks for effective governance. He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, saying he has maintained a consistent record of navigating economic pressures responsibly and driving major infrastructural developments.

The proposed budget prioritizes critical sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, security, and governance, which are vital to sustaining progress. Obasa stated that lawmakers will thoroughly examine the bill to ensure it serves the people’s collective interest. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his leadership, citing the Renewed Hope Agenda’s delivery of measurable national improvements, including ongoing infrastructure upgrades across Nigeria.

The consideration of the 2026 budget is a significant step towards addressing the social and economic needs of Lagos State residents. As the Assembly begins its review of the proposed budget, it is expected to carefully evaluate the allocation of resources to ensure that they align with the people’s aspirations and drive sustainable development in the state.
