The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concern over the perceived abandonment of the Safe School Initiative in Nigeria. According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the initiative, aimed at strengthening security around learning environments, has been neglected. Abdullahi made this statement while briefing the press on the resolutions from the party’s meeting held in Abuja, which was chaired by National Chairman, Senator David Mark.
The Safe School Initiative was established to prevent the abduction of school children and ensure their safety within educational spaces. Abdullahi noted that although the program was imperfect, it demonstrated a commitment to safeguarding children. However, he lamented that this commitment has been abandoned, and the government must demonstrate leadership in addressing the issue.
The ADC spokesman criticized some state governments for shutting down schools and sending children home instead of addressing the underlying security vulnerabilities. He argued that closing schools could embolden terrorists and urged the federal government to deploy Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel to unity schools across the country. Abdullahi emphasized that protecting schools is a constitutional obligation and that continued inaction would worsen insecurity.
The party’s call to action comes as some schools remain closed due to security concerns. Abdullahi warned that every day schools remain closed, terrorists gain confidence, communities suffer anxiety, and national stability further erodes. He urged the government to take decisive and transparent action to reopen and secure all affected schools promptly. The ADC also extended its congratulations to families and communities whose loved ones were recently rescued, including abducted worshippers in Kwara and school children in Kebbi State.
The situation highlights the need for the government to prioritize the safety and education of Nigerian children. The ADC’s concerns underscore the importance of addressing the underlying security issues and ensuring that schools are safe and secure environments for learning. As the government grapples with the challenge of insecurity, it is essential to find a balance between protecting schools and providing education to children, who are critical to the country’s future development.
