Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has emphasized the need for the party to present a strong candidate in the upcoming 2026 Osun governorship election to avoid defeat. Omisore made this statement during consultations in Osogbo and Olorunda local government areas, where he also advocated for a candidate with prior elective experience to run for the position.
According to Omisore, the party’s success in the August 8, 2026, poll depends on its ability to select a viable aspirant. He cautioned against leaving the party ticket to individual preference, stressing that the governorship of a state should be a collective decision among stakeholders. Omisore also warned against selecting a candidate based on personal relationships, emphasizing that the candidate’s ability to deliver should be the primary consideration.
Omisore revealed that he has been urged by stakeholders to contest the 2026 Osun governorship election, with the aim of addressing the incumbent’s perceived governance issues. He has therefore declared his interest in running for the position and has called on party members to support him at the primary election slated for December 13, 2025.
The Consultation Coordinator, Ajibola Famurewa, reported a positive response from local governments visited during the consultation process, with many showing acceptance and support for Omisore’s candidacy. Famurewa expressed confidence that Omisore would emerge as the APC’s flag bearer on December 13, 2025.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled to take place on August 8, 2026, and the APC’s choice of candidate is expected to play a significant role in determining the outcome. With Omisore’s declaration of interest and the consultation process underway, the party is moving towards selecting a candidate for the election. The primary election on December 13, 2025, will be a crucial step in this process, and the outcome will likely have a significant impact on the party’s chances in the 2026 poll.
