NNPC/Heirs Energies JV Adds Over 135 MMscf/d To Gas Supply • Channels Television

The NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture has successfully completed a pioneering rig‑less recompletion of a non‑associated gas well, marking a first in Nigeria. This innovative intervention doubled the joint venture’s gas production, reaching a peak of 135 million standard cubic feet per day and delivering a substantial boost to domestic gas supply that is expected to strengthen the nation’s energy security.

The increased gas output has had a profound impact on power generation, especially in the eastern network. Transcorp PLC’s TransAfam Power plant, a leading Nigerian generation facility, has quadrupled its output—from an average of 50 megawatts to over 180 megawatts, with peaks of 200 megawatts. Other plants supplied by the network, including First Independent Power Limited and Geometric Power, have also reported more stable operations and higher generation. Collectively, the output of these power plants has risen from around 100 megawatts to over 350 megawatts, providing energy for hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses and reducing blackouts. This additional power supports critical infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and factories.

The achievement has drawn high‑level recognition. Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, congratulated the Heirs Energies team on their success. The well at the centre of the project had previously been shut in due to excessive water production. Heirs Energies engineered a rig‑less through‑tubing recompletion into an untapped reservoir interval, completing the operation safely and efficiently. The project cost only 15 % of what drilling a new well would have required, setting a new standard for rig‑less solutions in Nigeria’s upstream sector.

The NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture’s accomplishment demonstrates the power of partnership, disciplined execution, and innovation in delivering substantial value for Nigeria. The joint venture continues to pursue gas‑focused, innovation‑driven developments aimed at expanding domestic gas supply, strengthening electricity generation, and supporting broader economic and industrial growth. With this milestone, Heirs Energies reaffirms its commitment to Nigeria’s gas‑to‑power agenda through responsible, performance‑driven upstream operations.
