Former Jigawa State Governor Alhaji Sule Lamido has given the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) a nine-day ultimatum to resolve its internal crises. The ultimatum was issued during a meeting with PDP stakeholders in Jigawa State, including former chairmen, commissioners, and political allies. The stakeholders called for the dissolution of the Ibadan convention and the organization of a new one.
Lamido expressed concerns that long-standing stakeholders like himself had been marginalized by new forces attempting to alter the party’s established structure. He alleged that the ongoing crisis is partly driven by attempts to weaken his influence within the PDP. The former governor emphasized that his recent legal actions were aimed at protecting the party’s legacy and his fundamental rights, which he claimed had been infringed upon.
According to Lamido, the party’s constitution dictates that Umar Damagum and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remain the legitimate leaders of the PDP until their tenure expires on December 8, 2025. He advocated for the formation of a caretaker committee, urging key stakeholders, including Wike and Damagum, to put aside their differences and support a unified caretaker body.
Lamido called on the PDP’s top hierarchy to convene a joint meeting to discuss the party’s challenges and chart a clear path towards restoring cohesion and credibility. He appealed to his supporters to remain calm and patient until December 8, stressing that developments within the party in the coming days would determine its future direction.
The PDP has been plagued by internal conflicts, with various factions vying for control. The party’s national convention, held in Ibadan, was marred by controversy, leading to calls for its dissolution. The formation of a caretaker committee could potentially provide a temporary solution to the party’s leadership crisis. With the 2025 general elections approaching, the PDP’s ability to resolve its internal conflicts will be crucial in determining its electoral prospects. The next few days will be critical in shaping the party’s future, and the outcome of Lamido’s ultimatum will be closely watched by political observers.
